It depends on the fire department where you apply, it may take a while before you can become a firefighter. Some departments hire every year while others hire every four- or five months. There may be a year-long training period followed by a probationary.

Your training will teach you how to respond in different situations and how to use different equipment. You will also learn how to use fire science techniques and emergency medical procedures. A fire hose handling course will also be offered. You will also practice emergency response skills using simulations. You will also have to take several written and physical fitness assessments.

Not only will you need to know the intricacies of firefighting, but you also need to have a positive mindset. Fire departments seek individuals with a solid work ethic and who can learn from past mistakes. A good reputation online and offline is also important.

Although there aren't any set time limits for fire academy programs, most fire departments require at the very least 600 hours. You can also extend your training by completing specialization programs. An example is a bachelor's or associate's degree in fire suppression, fire science, or fire science. Depending upon the program that you choose, this can increase your career by two to four additional years.

Before you are allowed to join the fire academy, you might need to pass a physical examination. It will test your strength, agility and other physical capabilities. It is often called the Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT). It will require you to pass a psychological screening. You will also need to complete eight firefighter-related tasks in 10 minutes or less. These tasks include searching, stair climbing and dragging a rope.

To prove your ability to read and solve basic problems, you will need to pass a written test. A polygraph test may be required. These tests are becoming more common in background investigations.

Fire departments usually hire in batches, but you can also apply directly to an individual fire department. A high school diploma or GED is acceptable by some agencies. You can pursue a bachelor’s degree or an associate’s degree if your career is advancing.
